But I have to admit that listening to this album after hearing the Peel and Tate versions is underwhelming and kinda depressing.

I've grown to like the production, btw. It's crappy yeah, but so charmingly crappy.

This is their second-best album (after The Queen Is Dead, which is perfect from start to finish). [2]

Hmm. I think this is the best album, overall. "Hatful" is the best compo IMO. But this is the beauty of the Smiths.. they overall genre shifts slightly, but Moz's delivery and Marr's incredible guitar work remains constant. I just prefer the eponymous album... they are all fairly awesome though

    The superior Smiths album.

This album is plain brilliant and I don't even mind the production. At times I even prefer this mix to the one on "Hatful...". The guitars in say "What Difference..." and "This Charming Man" are given more space to shine here than on the John Peel-sessions, something I prefer. The songs are excellent and I'm having a hard time choosing which half of the album I prefer to the other half.

I don't know why more people don't like this album as much as meat is murder or the queen is dead or Strangeways, Here We Come i actually am actually/should like this album more than the others because this is the first smiths record ever recorded in 184 .. without this record there would be no smiths and no one would ever know who the smiths were.
