I bought this album when it came out and it just made my mother throw her hands up. She'd just given up on me at that point as far as music goes. Threw in the towel. There's no reggae but there are spare African beats that are the precursor to the African Pop musice of Paul Simon's Graceland and Vampire Weekend. There's Spanish/tango guitars in there and the girls screech like punk rockers and sing about stuff girls know about. Thus the precursor to Bodyrox's Luciana ("Yeah, Yeah"), Courtney Love/Hole, Luscious Jackson. La Roux ("Bulletproof") and a host of others.

This album exemplifies the fertility of British music after the Sex Pistols had scorched the earth. Drawing heavily on reggae rhythms and full of unexpected instrumentation, The Slits released one of the most innovative albums of the time, easily standing alongside the Gang Of Four and the Au Pairs. I still think the cover was a mistake though!
