For a Fool (3:56)

Cover of Port of Morrow

From Port of Morrow

Mercer told UK newspaper The Independent about the songwriting process for Port of Morrow. “I’m responsible for the songs,” he said. “I write the songs, I write the lyrics, I come up with the big ideas. From that point on it’s a collaboration. Greg co-produced it, he put it together, he figured out the overall aesthetic and how these songs will be presented. And Nik , who plays a bunch of guitar on the record, was hugely influential on its sound. There are a lot of great hooks that he just came up with on the spot.”

There are a lot of great things about this song. Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles influences. Vocal harmonies that echo Oh, Inverted World. Yeah lyrics are very un-Mercer and very radio friendly but that's pretty much the whole of Port of Morrow for you.

I understand hating it when groups make a huge step away from form but it still sounds like the Shins to me. This one sounds to me like it was using a lot of Mercer's oldies influence, which I love.
