Andrew Weatherall’s Sabres of Paradise were one of the U.K.’s most celebrated experimental techno groups. A combined effort of Weatherall and collaborators Jagz Kooner and Gary Burns, the group released a flood of singles and EPs, many of which were collected on compilations released by Warp and Weatherall’s other main focus: the Sabrettes label, with releases from Plod and Slab, among others.

Born in Windsor, Berkshire, Weatherall a former refuse collector shares an interest with Led Zeppelins Jimmy Page in the writings of well known occultist Aleister Crowley. This could be reflected in the 12 inch vinyl single, released in the early ninetees, ‘Sugar Daddy.’ Female Jazz type vocals gently open the track moving the listener into a dream state before, building into a frenzy of electronic rythm & a foot stomping club beats which invoke otherworldly realities proving hard to ignore. This being a fine example of the creative genius of The Sabres Of Paradise and a professional knowledge of the use of hypnotic ‘Shamanic’ type beats common to the dance culture. Sugar Daddy is a far cry from the more ambient smoke belch yet remains a lesser known track, (currently missing from the track lists here)

Weatherall, considers himself a DJ first, and his exhausting schedule of deckwork has been arguably as influential as his records, inspiring scores of other DJs and anticipating trends in trance-techno, inelegant dance, and even trip-hop.
