Shine a Light (4:17)

Cover of Exile on Main Street

From Exile on Main Street and 7 other releases

According to the Shine a Light Songfacts, Mick Jagger originally wrote the lyrics for Stones guitarist Brian Jones in 1968. The original lyrics were about Jones’ drug addiction which was slowly detaching him from the rest of the band, and the song was called “Get A Line On You,” but it was never released. After Jones’ death, Jagger rewrote some of the lyrics and it was released in 1972 as “Shine A Light.”

"May the Good Lord shine a light on you" Strange to think that this is the same band that sang Sympathy for the Devil. Not that I'm complaining, because they're both great songs.

Excellent read on Southern gospel - agree that this is the right song to put last on the "Exile" because of its almost prayerful quality.

It would have been a great closer to their gig at Hyde Park in 1969. You know, the Brian Jones mini tribute. The song wasn't finished yet, anyway.
