If he was from Venus, would he feed us with a spoon?
If he was from Mars, then that'd be cool
Standing right on campus, would he stamp us in a file?
Hangin' down in Memphis all the while

I have loved this song from the moment I heard it in 1990 ... easily one of the greatest hooky choruses meets guitar riff ever.

"The great Alex Chilton is gone — folk troubadour, blues shouter, master singer, songwriter and guitarist. Someone should write a tune about him. Then again, nah, that would be impossible. Or just plain stupid."

This is the song that started it all for me with respect to the Mats. My very first Mats song, and I was hooked!!

Dude, awesome comment. The Goo Goo Dolls stole their entire sound, look, act, and everything else from The Replacements. Here in Philly they were playing the 4th of July celebration, and one of the local news ladies referred to the Goo Goo Dolls as "Rock Legends", I just about sh*t myself when that happened. And if I ever meet her in person, I'm going to laugh right in her face, anyone that would consider that horrific band a legend of any sort, probably doesn't have much knowledge about anything, let alone music.... Can you imagine, the f**king Goo Goo Dolls as "legends". They are big-time frauds my friend, and you called it perfectly!!

I'm convinced that the Goo Goo Dolls stole their sound from the Replacements.
