Biography

Columbus, United States (1999 – present)

The torch bearers of Ohio weirdo metal genre-blitzing in the early part of this decade, RYBTP began as a trio in 1999 in Columbus, Ohio. Based on demos by Tyler Derryberry (Ho-Ag) and Justin Modica, the band was from the beginning grounded in abrupt tempo changes, mathy and programmatic writing, jarring halts and Elfmanesque and Latin melodies (particularly easy to spot in the early compositions “Melody” and “Tarantula”). Columbus bassist Skot Thompson (1Point3, No No, Lo Pan, Branks, Christ On a Spike) filled out the bass role and more, thanks to a unique style and double full-stack amp setup.

The band went through several personnel expansions, ending up in 2004 with the lineup of Derryberry, Thompson with Bill Mehlhorn on drums, Chris Wilkins on guitar (Modica had left to pursue a career in chemical engineering), Mike Kania on trumpet and Brian Rutledge (Hallelujah the Hills). By the end of their tenure, the RYBTP had managed blend influences as diverse as Naked City, Helmet, Thelonious Monk, Fishbone, Braniac, INXS, Cannibal Corpse, Thinking Fellers Union, Six Finger Satellite and Esquivel.

RYBTP released three official albums, all self-titled. The final album (commonly referred to as “3”) was released at the band’s last show in February 2004.
