The creation of The Pikey Project has been the continuation of a lifelong obsession with music.
Mikey (the Pikey) started to play the piano at six years of age and worked at it until he went to music college at the age of 18. He only lasted there one year. They kicked him out for ‘having too much fun’.
He continued to ‘have fun’ with music throughout his life but is now relishing the time spending exploring some of his past and listening to other musicians to gain further inspiration.
Having been born in Trinidad to the sound of steel drums and spending his formative years in Venezuela listening to the sound of quatros and maracas, his sense of rhythm (for an Englishman that is), has always been heightened.
His early career as a sound engineer resulted in exposure to a myriad of sound technology. The fascination remains, but he now tries to keep things technologically simple in order to not obscure the music.
The music created under The Pikey Project moniker was driven by Nicola Cornwell who identified a ‘need’ in the Caribbean for background jazzy lounge music with ‘added interest’. Hopefully, that is what has been achieved with instrumental tracks written, recorded and mixed in Suffolk, England… the Caribbean…and Manhattan, New York.
