The Orangutangos are an American Experimental Rock band originally from Danville, California located in the San Francisco Bay Area. Currently the band is composed of Shawn Rasson - (Guitar, Bass & Keyboard), Chris Kerr - (Drums & Percussion) and Justin Downs - (Piano, Keyboard, Bass & Guitar).

Both Kerr and Rasson are childhood friends that grew up in the small town of Danville. They have been writing music together since 2000, after reuniting in high school. They immediately began writing and recording rough song ideas onto cassette tapes, which were lost somewhere in the space/time continuum. Musicians came and went with time. However, in 2001 Chris and Shawn began to write music with guitar player, Chris Lee. The three started a project called Hypno-Trigger, which was an experimental rock/metal band mostly influenced by funk, metal and progressive rock. Shawn played bass for Hypno-Trigger until 2003, when he had to move to Santa Cruz, CA for school. Chris continued to play drums for Hypno-Trigger until 2004.

Shawn met Justin Downs while attending college in Santa Cruz. They both played in a project called Ward 6 and a different project called Dirty Mountain Moonshine, in between 2003 to 2006. Kerr contacted Rasson in 2006 about making a new music project. He wanted to bring back the previous songs written over the years, work on them and evolve them. Since both of Shawn’s other projects we’re in a state of hiatus, he was up for the idea and thus The Orangutangos were born. Downs joined the project in 2008. They are still currently writing music.
