  • A truly great group. So many of the Garage Rock acts of the 60s only managed one or two great songs, so when you grab their LP(s) it's inevitably disappointing that they never cut any other songs half as good as, say, "96 Tears" or "Psychotic Reaction." The Monks, though, had an incredible song and a real knack for finding hooks and putting together rhythmic stompers that clearly influenced both the upcoming West German "Krautrock" music (early Can and Faust both seem to have taken inspiration from Black Monk Time) and, even more obviously, The Fall. Black Monk Time is definitely one of the very best albums of 1966 and deserves to be much better known and more widely heard than it is.
