This is one of the great albums of the 90s--and now it's effectively lost. Its willingness to confront the issues of the day made it timely; its stylistic diversity and seriousness of purpose make it timeless. The early 90s found the Mekons grappling with failure--their own in the music biz, and that of the European Left. A decade of artistic ground-clearing and a spectacular major-label debut weren't enough to ensure success--not when that debut (The Mekons Rock 'N' Roll) took capitalism (in its rock 'n' roll guise) to task just as it was reaching ascendancy and the Left was being thrown into disarray. So the powers-that-be punted them to the curb. But failing to secure fame and fortune wouldn't quiet them--not when the events of the day demanded a response. And if you listen closely to this album, you'll hear the prescience of their response to their failure (and that of the Left): the Mekons saw the way we live now and the music that's the background noise to that way of life.
