About this album

Octahedron is the fifth studio album by band The Mars Volta, set for release on June 23, 2009. The album is being released by Warner Bros. in North America and Mercury Records worldwide.

Omar Rodríguez-López had discussed the band’s next album as early as January 2008, the month that The Bedlam in Goliath was released, claiming “I consider it to be our album. Cedric Bixler Zavala has also spoken of the album as “acoustic” and “,” yet stated: “We know how people can be so linear in their way of thinking, so when they hear the new album, they’re going to say, ‘This is not an acoustic album! There’s electricity throughout it!’ But it’s our version. That’s what our band does — celebrate mutations. It’s our version of what we consider an acoustic album.”

On April 22, 2009, the album’s first single, Cotopaxi, was played as the “hottest record in the world” for that day on the Zane Lowe BBC Radio One show.

An e-mail sent to people who had signed up to The Mars Volta’s newsletter on May 16 confirmed details of the album and provided a link streaming four songs (Since We’ve Been Wrong, Cotopaxi, With Twilight as My Guide, and Desperate Graves) upon inserting one of the band’s four previous studio albums into the disc tray of the user’s computer. The promotion also provided a chance to win a pair of tickets to their show at the ICA, London on June 18 and a link to pre-order the digipack, limited edition of the album exclusive to HMV.

Has and always will be my favourite Mars Volta record, possibly one of my all time favourites. I totally get the hate though, it's pretty much how fans of a primary acoustic band would react if they suddenly made an album like De-Loused or Bedlam in Goliath. Just massive change that not everybody will appreciate. I'm just glad I can and so can others

I don't know why, but this feels like their 'Wish You Were Here.' [2]

Can't wait to play this during the summer (as usual). Also, "PERFECT production." [2]

I think this album serves as a preamble to the sound they were going for on Noctuorniquet. However I love this album and Noctuorniquet still hasn't really grown on me.

This album is unlike all others and takes a while to get into it; most people will never like it. It is the most soft and dark, sounds like a gotic album in some moments. Even songs like "Teflon" lack the progressive approach of previous works, but also lack the strange sounds of "Noctourniquet". I remember Omar saying this is how they imagined an acoustic album. Is not supposed to be perceived as a Mars Volta album. They always tried to make something different, and only that should get some recognition. Is not easy and most artist don't even risk changing too much from album to album. I personally am not sure that I could compose a song like "Tarantism" and then "Copernicus", just saying.

This was a sort of a return to form after the dreadful Goliath, but it's nowhere near the level of the first three.

Solid album, but not my favourite of theirs. Can't really understand why everyone hates it so much, though.

They lost weight but not strength. I prefer the experimental one.
