Formed in Phoenix by Mike Sortino and Eric Paul Johnson in 1981, inspired by radio morning personality Jonathon Brandmeier, who called his listeners “Loons”. Sortino left the group in 1986 for a solo career as M. C. Brennan. Members came and went, but Johnson was constant throughout the group’s life, much like Jeff Lynne to ELO, only with a smaller whitey-fro.

The band’s music ranged from parody (like its version of “Beast of Burden,” the pizza love song “Pizza Burnin’”) to original novelty tunes like “The Fife In My Life”, stand-up comedy bits like “My Pet Peeve”, to somber, serious songs like “The Girl I love Has A Boyfriend (And It Isn’t Me)”.

Johnson was the band’s lone protruding member by 1994, when he stopped recording as The L.T.D.’s. He went on to solo spoken-word projects, pestering hives of angry Africanized bees, and recording songs as Stomach Monkeys, and is working with poet Kathryn Crabtree to record as the duo Crabtree Johnson.
