Torture (4:53)

“Torture” is the second single released off the album Victory by The Jacksons. Written by Jackie Jackson and fellow Motown veteran Kathy Wakefield, the song is about someone ending a relationship, and the torture that a person can receive whilst trying to end it. Jackie was originally going to sing the song with his brother, Michael, but Jackie’s role instead went to Jermaine Jackson, whose availability for the album was in question until the last minute. The rest of the Jacksons sang the chorus along with Michael and Jermaine.

The song received a mixed reaction from critics. The music video was most well known for Michael not being available, in which case a dummy had to be put in his place throughout the video. Paula Abdul choreographed the video, in which various scenes of torture are displayed, with the Jacksons being on the receiving end of most of the torture. The song peaked at #17 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making it the second best selling single on the album, behind “State of Shock”. It also peaked at #26 on the UK charts.

LOL! I remember this video 2. I'm right there with ya'll: @MJRocker1987 and @2Serenity. I loved them during this era, not just cuz I was an 80's baby, but because of the songs. I ♥'d this one and "Can You Feel It"... Those off the top were my favs. Overall, I ♥'d the Jacksons i.g.

I remember when this video premiered on Friday Night Videos as a child. I was so mesmerized but then I was like WHY DID MJ look like a wax figure? Later I found out about the controversy around the video. I so love the entire song regardless of MJ's involvement. Was that really Tito playing the guitar?? That was something that I can't remember and I don't have my liner notes in front of me. Did anyone go to the Victory Tour?? The Jacksons performed it. The crowd went ABSOLUTELY WILD!! xox

My entire childhood was filled with nightmares caused by the music video, which I insisted on watching almost nightly. LOL!

Another great group effort. Co-written by Jackie, lead vocals by Michael and Jermaine. Makes me somehow nostalgic for 1984 even though I wasn't even born yet... LOL.

I love this song so much, even if Michael's input was minimal. The brothers held their own on this song. I can't help but think this song would have been AWESOME live.
