About this album

Pamplemousse is the debut EP from Canadian /pop and musician Dan McLay (under the name The J. Arthur Keenes Band), released by Pause on October 28, 2009. McLay recorded and released the EP while still in high school; every instrument was recorded separately, then later combined with tracks programmed on a Game Boy using LSDJ and vocals to form the final product.

Although McLay had individually released upwards of 60 songs on the now-defunct chipmusic community 8bitcollective in the years leading up to Pamplemousse, the EP was his first official album release. In comparison to the songs appearing on Pamplemousse, that early material was usually instrumental, and often lacked the EP’s diverse organic instrumentation.

Upon its release, the album was received favorably by the chipmusic community. Special praise was also given to its combination of vocals and chiptune programming, a mixture that was often perceived to be synonymous with inferior-quality music at the time.
