A Very Cellular Song (12:06)

Cover of The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter

From The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter and 6 other releases

This song is 13 minutes of total weirdness. Mike Heron solos on most of it accompanied by kazoo, harpsichord, sitar and a lot of unidentifiable noises. You should look up the lyrics on another site like lyrics.com because they are illustrative of the best of the String Band’s approach to the universe. There are influences of chants, biblical references, apparently stream-of-consciousness strings on cellular life.

The Wikipedia entry for this song says “its centrepiece was Mike Heron’s “A Very Cellular Song”, a 13-minute reflection on life, love and amoebas; its complex structure incorporated a Bahamian spiritual (“I Bid You Goodnight”) and an adaptation of a Sikh hymn (“May the pure light within you”). It had a layered production, using multi-track recording techniques and a very wide array of instruments from all corners of the world, including sitar, gimbri, shenai, oud, harpsichord, panpipes and kazoo.”

Winter was cold and the clothing was thin
But the gentle shepherd calls the tune
Oh, dear mother what shall I do?
First please your eyes and then your ears, Jenny

I'm hearing the original this time, rather than the 'Nebulous Nearness' one, and yes, it is more bonkers than the later one, but utterly delightful

If you love ISB, have a listen to Cob (Clive's Original Band) featuring clive Palmer ex of ISB. Marvellously odd psych-folk for want of a better tag
