Heart Like a Wheel (4:29)

First released in October 1990, Heart Like A Wheel was the Human League’s first release of the 90s. The track was a minor hit in both the UK (#29) and the USA (#32). The parent album Romantic?, however, was a commercial failure, ending a long relationship with Virgin records.
Martin Rushent, who produced the Dare album, returned to produce and the track was co-written by former Human League member Jo Callis.
Heart Like A Wheel referenced “holy war”, eleven years before September 11 and was released around the time of the first Gulf War. The lyrics refer to the dehumanisation effect of war, with the heart being compared to a machine (a wheel “beating cold as steel”).
It was not the first time a Human League track contained a political message, with 1984’s The Lebanon referencing the political and social climate in the Middle East.
Despite not being one of the group’s biggest hits, the Heart Like A Wheel has continued to be a highlight of The Human League’s regular live performances.
