Biography

The Heart Throbs were a UK Britpop/Guitarpop group who came out of Reading in the mid 80s. They would release their first album ‘Cleopatra Grip’ in 1990, followed by ‘Jubilee Twist’ in 1992. Their third and final album ‘Vertical Smile’ was released in 1993, and they played their final UK show on December 8th of that year. A truly magical group is now gone, but will not be forgotten.

Key members: vocalist and songwriter Rose Carlotti, keyboard player/composer Stephen Ward, and guitar player Alan Borgia. Rose and her sister, Rachel (also in the band) were the sisters of the late Pete DeFreitas, drummer of Echo and the Bunnymen.

Rose went on to form Angora which became Tom Patrol, and included Rose Carlotti and Steve Beswick from The Heart Throbs. Tom Patrol has since dis-banded.

Saw these supporting the Wedding Present at Manchester Ritz many years back. Also on the bill was a local band not many folks had heard of. Inspiral carpets or something ;-) It was a great night. "Here I hide" was the Heart Throbs track I remember from the night. Great tune.

Was Cleopatra Grip, THE most lushly produced underrated album of the 90's. Dreamtime says it all. I've just dusted it off again.

One of the top five British indie bands of the late 80s and early 90s. (The other four were ... well, I'll let you guess)
