The Format was an indie pop band formed in Peoria, Arizona, United States in 2001 by Sam Means and Nate Ruess. On February 4, 2008, the band announced that they were no longer making a new album and that the band had gone into hiatus. Nate Ruess, the band’s singer and lyricist, left the following message on the band’s website:
“We have just put out word that we will not be making a new Format album. Please understand this was a tough decision and we’re both upset about it. While we accept there will be false speculation as to why, understand that Sam and I remain extremely close and in fact are still passing the twin peaks box set back and forth in an attempt to figure out who REALLY killed Laura Palmer. We also want to thank everyone with and within the Format, particularly Mike, Don, and Marko, whom without, none of this would have ever even been fully realized. We both suggest you support their musical talents and whatever they decide to do. And lastly we want to thank the fans who made this the best 5 years of our lives.” Nate went on to form the band fun. with members of Anthallo and Steel Train.

Throughout the band’s existence, the duo toured and recorded with a revolving door of musicians, and as of 2007, the band consisted of guitarists Mike Schey and Mark Buzard, bassist Don Raymond, drummer Adam Boyd, and its principal members, singer Nate Ruess and multi-instrumentalist Sam Means.

It's hard to label this band with a particular style, since they only had two albums and they were pretty different from each other. I agree with those who are saying it's time to move on to fun...they totally echo The Format, and at times are better ("Benson Hedges"). In terms of a spiritual successor to Dog Problems, you won't find a better album than Aim and Ignite. Jack and Andrew are great musicians, too.

fun. is certainly a great group of musicians. It is disappointing to see Sam and Nate apart (hopefully this is only temporary), but at least this project of Nate's is really looking up. I had a chance to interview Nate himself a few weeks ago before the final show of fun.'s latest tour. I posted a review (as well as the audio from the interview) on http://www.indiegasm.wordpress.com for you to check out. There's a few articles on other great musicians as well to read up on.

Fun. is amazing. not AS good but still very good. and they play Format songs live. I suggest everyone that likes the format latch on to fun. it's pretty much an extention of The Format.
