The Fermats was formed by Markus Magnuson, Leo Nathorst-Böös and Anna Jansson during the summer of 2002. Later that year they release their first EP on cassette, called Waffle Breakfast With The Fermats, which among other songs contained a cover version of the song Electronic Renaissance by Belle and Sebastian. During 2003 they recorded their second release, called Six or Seven Ways To Spend Your Summer EP, abandoning the cassette format in favor of CD.

During this time Gustav Ågren joined the band as bass player, and Anna left the band. When The Fermats started playing live gigs they also invited Håkan Waara on drums, ditching the drum machine they had used earlier. Later on, Håkan left the band and was replaced by Justus Björk for a short period of time, in his turn replaced by Niclas Sjöbeck who played with the band until they disbanded in 2004 or 2005 depending on who you ask.

The Fermats was part of a short but intensive twee wave in Sweden, among bands such as Funday Mornings, Handsome Train, Second-Hand Furniture and The Tidy Ups. Three of the members also played in the band Corduroy Utd.

According to the band’s low-activity website, a third release was fully recorded but never released, this is supposed to happen sooner or later though.
