The Envy Corps’ indie quasi-anthems, replete with galvanizing arrangements, congratulatory rhythms and elasticized melodies have garnered the Des Moines-based band the affection of the attentive Midwest and fans both nationally and internationally.
After the release of their major label debut, Dwell, in 2008, The Envy Corps have retreated back to the studio to record their anticipated sophomore album, tentatively entitled It Culls You. Luke Pettipoole (vocals, bass), Brandon Darner (guitar), Micah Natera (synthesizer, guitar) and Scott Yoshimura (drums) are redefining their sound by taking the pop melodies of their early work and marrying them with a heightened rhythmic sense and a more stripped down, concise approach to instrumentation. The new material has made appearances at recent live shows with fans embracing the bands’ exploration into a less syrupy landscape that stretches the boundaries of the conventional immediate pop song.
Pettipoole formed the band in Ames in 2002 and shepherded a rotating cast of musicians until 2005, in which time their debut, Soviet Reunion, was released on Ames’ Bi-Fi Records. The band really started to take shape once Darner and Yoshimura came aboard in mid-2005, marking a change in sound and aspiration. The EP I Will Write You Love Letters If You Tell Me To was self-released in April 2006 and afforded the band their first taste of national attention by charting well on the CMJ Top 200.

I definitely hear the similarities in tone but the general aesthetic and vibe of this band is going in a different direction than radiohead did, especially concerning the more upbeat songs. Not to mention radiohead is hot off the release of King of Limbs, a much more electronically produced (and awesome) album. I DID however, hear some interesting bass tones a couple songs in to It Culls You that reminded me of the all too popular wubwub bass in modern dubstep. Sounds pretty good though :p

on my first listen to the new lp right now, pretty stoked with it so far. I'm actually pretty glad that it's different from Dwell (one of my favorite albums ever), because you never like to see a band just endlessly repeating itself. Can't wait to hear what this band does down the road, will definitely be following them.

No doubt. The band made the album they wanted to make, and not what a major label wanted them to make. Having said that, I think Dwell played to all their strengths and is essentially a bonafide masterpiece. Not to mention that the Kid Gloves EP was made without major label interference and I think the general sound on that collection of songs is superior to It Culls You.

Just saw them in Des Moines for a free show at The Blue Moose. Tore the house down! Luke pulls everyone up on stage for "Story Problem," and it was the most feel-good moment of the night. I'm a dyed in the wool metalhead, but The Envy Corps is one of my favorite bands!
