• WANTED: KC/Lawrence (& more) Music

    1. This is an ever-growing list of bands and albums I am searching for. Much like the 'haves' journal, not all of these artists are current residents of the area, but all of them have called the region home at one time or another.
    2. This list will never be completely up-to-date, as there are so many musicians that have come out of the area and have released albums with multiple bands. I've also chalked it up to a near-impossibility that I will ever get all of these, but I can try.
    3. I'm open for almost all types of music. If you have something you may not see here, don't let that keep you from speaking up about it. The only types of music I make a general rule not to track down are those who lean more towards a sound of rap rock/nu-metal (downthesun, 8 degrees, Canvas), bar band/classic rock/hair metal/general guitar wankery (Puddle of Mudd fits into the bar band category, the others I don't care to list examples for), or bad rap (Tech N9ne, countless others).

    1. This is a journal containing bands and albums I have recordings from on my computer. Though I try to support local music as best as I can by attending shows and buying albums, not all of this music I am in direct physical possession of through purchase.
    2. Not all of the bands below are directly from the KC/Lawrence area. Other cities and towns I keep in this collection are Topeka, KS, Columbia, MO, Wichita, KS, Warrensburg, MO, Manhattan, KS, and a few other, more rural areas of the region. Essentially, it contains everything east of and including Wichita in Kansas, and everything west of and including Columbia in Missouri.
    3. In addition to the previous point, you will notice that not all of the bands here are current residents of the region. Many bands (Mates of State, White Rabbits, etc.) unfortunately decided to move away to a larger metro area. Others (The Appleseed Cast, Namelessnumberheadman), were started in different regions and then relocated here at some point, usually early in their career. …

  • Rediscovering Big Dipper

    19 Nov 2006, 21:40 by popgurl

Last night I went out with a couple I've not socialized with before who were old time music folks who've lived in Lawrence a lot longer than I have. They had a lot of great stories, not least of which was seeing the Sex Pistols in San Antonio TX. Two and a half songs before they self destructed, they said.

Then we got to talking local music, and The Embarrassment, and I said I'd kind of missed them but backtracked to them when I fell in love with Big Dipper. And we talked for a while about how great Big Dipper were.

So today I made a point of listening to all of my Big Dipper again. And boy do they stand the test of time. I guess it's nearly 20 years since their records came out but they are still such a joyous raucous blast of funny, catchy, dancable, and sometimes beautiful rock 'n' roll. I really ought to listen to them more, except I guess I listened to them so much at the time I hardly even hear them now.

So just a heads up to anyone who hasn't heard them. …

Last night I got to see The Embarrassment play a reunion show in Lawrence KS. The Embarrassment bill themselves as “the best band you never heard of,” and not without reason. They were a product of Wichita Kansas (not exactly the epicenter of cool) in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and they played a very distinctive version of angular, ironic, nerdy, cool post-new wave quirk pop. They wrote songs about things like Elizabeth Montgomery’s face ( Genie on I Dream of Genie): “her cheeks are running a race/to see who gets to her collarbone first/it’s Elizabeth Montgomery’s fa-a-ace/her fa-a-ace” or Celebrity Art Party (“there goes Art Carney!”). I first heard the Embarrassment in 1983 when my roommate’s all-but-officially-live-in boyfriend brought home their record Death Travels West. I wasn’t really ready for them. It wasn’t until I fell in love with a band that came out of their ashes in the second half of the 80s, Big Dipper (from Boston), that I went back and realized what I’d been missing the first time around. …
