Here she comes in her palanquin
On the back of an elephant
On a bed made of linen and sequins and silk

"Within sight of the baroness, seething spite for this lithe largesse, by her side sits the baron, her barrenness barbs her" Just epic word-nerdery right there. Well-played, Colin Meloy.

Sharpur, it never said that the elephant was carrying the palanquin. It just said she was on an elephant's back. So, obviously, the titular character rides on the back of the elephant, and the elephant is riding on the palanquin, which is carried by humans, and the humans are carried by the earth, which is carried by a giant turtle whose gender is unknown. This is why it's a palanquin and not a howdah. Obviously.

Without the vocals, this would be the 2nd coming of the Ventures

Of course you don't actually put a palanquin on an elephant, that would be a howdah. I'm willing to overlook the error in context however. ;)

You've listened to The Decemberists, but not The Infanta. Glad we could nip that sad situation in the bud. Great song!
