The first time I witnessed this live was at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Chicago. It was the first song of The Decemberists set, and they were backed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. It was raining very lightly, and the crowd was a mix of elderly and young folk alike. The elderly thought it was just the orchestra doing a free show, and they all vacated the seats quickly. This song was one of the most powerful things I've ever witnessed.
