Love it! I'd say this album falls just short of The Crane Wife for being their best.

Have you seen The Decemberists: A Practical Handbook? The way they recorded this album is fantastic!

Don't misunderstand me... this is a tremendous record... but The Crane Wife is their masterpiece. This is a mere collection of great tracks... but The Crane Wife comes together as an album much better than Picaresque does.

This and Hazards of Love are my favorites, with the exception of 'The Bachelor and the Bride' from Her Majesty.

Crane Wife and Castaways & Cutouts owns this. Not to say this isn't good, just a bit disappointing to these ears.

how does that make it overrated? Its my favorite of theirs because in my opinion it features some of their finest story telling (bagmans gambit, mariners revenge song, on the bus mall).
