I agree with those who say get the original albums in whichever order you prefer. Even though they have a lot it just makes it better. Greatest hits albums always disappoint it some way. The four shown above are a pretty good starting point.

how can a cure best of album not contain anything from seventeen seconds? (a shortened edit of 'a forest' does not count)

robert smith compiled it himself so whatever he thinks is best

It seems that a version exists, which replaces "The Walk" with "The Caterpillar" and "Pictures of You". I wish they included "Pictures..." on the standard edition – it was quite successful IIRC, and it's my favourite Cure song ever. "A Letter to Elise" is great too but it was kind of a flop to be honest. Also, there's already "High" and "Friday..." from Wish and no album is represented here by more that two tracks.

You know, this IS a great introduction to The Cure because if you like what is presented here you'll definitely want to dig out more of their stuff, and it's widely available (unlike Galore or Staring at the Sea). (Of course it's lacking lots of quality material but you know, it says "Greatest Hits" on the cover...) I know it worked for me – thanks to the inclusion of "Lullaby" and "Love Song" I got Disintegration... which has since become one of my favourite albums of all time.

If you want a good introduction to The Cure, get Staring at the Sea and Galore instead.

Just wondering why they didn't put Letter to Ellise in it?

No fan can ever agree on a perfect compilation album. However, it's a good introduction to people who have never listened to The Cure.

Greatest Hits contemplations generally suck, and this is no exception. Doesn't even have Plainsong. If you want a real introduction to the Cure, listen to Boys Don't Cry, Pornography, and Disintegration in their entirety.
