There are currently two artists with this name:
1. The Common - Pioneers of 'Geek-Hop', THE COMMON came together at the start of 2009 after the four guys met at a local open mic night run by Mike Brown the singer/MC and Richard Berner the guitarist. After playing what was thought to be a one-off gig with drummer Scott Walker & bassist Neil Downton, the band thought they should play together more often.
THE COMMON play a mixed style of indie, hip-hop & rock. While other rappers sing about women & money, THE COMMON write about what they know best. Being skint, evading sobriete and more importantly…comic books.
The band have support the likes of THE HOT RATS, KID BRITISH, VAGABOND & American rappers GURU & AKIL THE MC from JURASSIC 5.
2. We play a mix of electronica, indie and good old fashioned catchy pop music. Our main inspirations are Friendly Fires, Tom Vek, Jamie XX, and The Foals.
Our set up consists mostly of a backing track normally consisting of synth lines backing up energetic live drums which switch from drum and bass to hard hitting rock, funky uplifting live bass, melodic pick guitar and chanty melodic Tom Vek-esque vocals.
We like to think our sound is very original and this tends to be reflected in the feedback we have received at the gigs we have played and also the fact that we have had no trouble what so ever acquiring shows, with promoters always loving our sound.
We are completely self-sufficient recording and mixing our music ourselves with Charlie also being a professional producer.
To date we have played The Barfly, 93 Feet East, The Water Rats and 229 The Venue amongst others. We have also recently been picked for the Fresh Meat Battle Of The Bands competition at The Queen Of Hoxton which will be judged by NME/Timeout and The Maccabees.
