There's a solitary man crying, "Hold me"
It's only because he's lonely
If the keeper of time runs slowly
He won't be alive for long

best track (amongst some stiff competition!) on London Calling in my opinion. Had the album bought Christmas 1979 and loved it ever since!

@lorendefect, it's Mick singing, not Joe.

This song proves that the Clash wasn't "just" a punk band. Epic song, on an epic album, by an epic band.

From the opium den and the ballroom gin to the Belmont Chair playing violin. The gambler's face cracks into a grin as he lays down the king of spades.

As close as they got to being a British Springsteen.

There's a solitary man crying hold me, it's only because he's a lonely - I've had this tune in my head all the Christmas holiday. The Clash are beautiful in every way.

There can't be many bands who wrote so many great songs across a whole range of musical styles as well as The Clash. Those who prejudge The Clash as just a "punk" group are missing out big time. A brilliant tune.
