The Cat Empire is a six-piece alternative band from Melbourne, Australia. Their sound has been described as a fusion of jazz, funk, and rock with heavy latin / salsa influences (not to mention reggae, ska and dub). Currently, the Cat Empire consists of Ollie McGill (keyboard and backing vocals), Ryan Monro (bass and backing vocals), Felix Riebl (percussion and vocals), Harry James Angus (trumpet and vocals), Will Hull-Brown (drums), and Jamshid “Jumps” Khadiwhala (decks, percussion). A strong, recurrent theme of their music is the rejection of materialism, war, and intolerance and an enthusiastic embrace of cultural diversity and the simple, carefree life.

The Cat Empire began as a trio with McGill, Riebl, and Monro in late 1999, and started playing a wide variety of gigs in Melbourne. The band soon expanded in 2001, adding Angus, Hull-Brown, and Khadiwala.

Just saw these guys in New York City, and they were really good. The band has 2 awesome vocalists in Felix and Harry. Lots of drawn out solos. Weird that the centerpiece of the concert was "Darkness", which went 20+ minutes. Meanwhile, they did not play "The Car Song". They are fantastic musicians but I wish they were more fun, like they seem on CD. Guess you can't have everything, right? They said this was their last tour date before going back into the studio with more dates in 2010.

I've seen about 95% of the bands I want to see, and this band is in the 5%. I live in Devon so when they do come to the UK they tend to, like many bands, only play the big cities, venues. So I'd have to travel to at least Bristol. The only other time I've done that was when Rancid came down, and at the time I felt like my life was complete. Turns out that's hugely respectfulness to TCE. When I see you my live will be that little bit more complete. Also tour with The Living End. They get a great reception here in the UK, and you'd be the perfect band to play with them. You guys are Australia's finest.
