Los Angeles, United States (1964 – 1973)
Their music bridged the gaps between the socially and spiritually conscious folk music of Bob Dylan, and the studio trickery of The Beach Boys. Throughout their career they helped forge such subgenres as folk rock, raga rock, psychedelic rock, jangle pop, and – on their 1968 classic Sweetheart Of The Rodeo – country rock inviting Gram Parsons on rhythm guitar. The original lineup consisted of Chris Hillman, David Crosby, Michael Clarke, Jim (Roger) McGuinn and Gene Clark. After several line-up changes (with lead singer/guitarist McGuinn as the only consistent member), they broke up in 1973.
Some of their trademark songs include pop versions of Bob Dylan’s
Mr. Tambourine Man and Pete Seeger’s Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There Is a Season), and the originals I’ll Feel A Whole Lot Better, and Eight Miles High.In 1991 they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and several band members have launched successful solo careers after leaving the group.

Disagree with you Porculus, Roger McGuinn is widely regarded as an innovative guitarist who influenced Tom Petty and Peter Buck among others. Chris Hillman was a wonderful melodic bassist as well.

they were good writers and their music was great, but they were weak instrumentalists. Especially the drummer Michael Clarke was the band's Achilles' heal, but also the lead guitar parts on Eight Miles High and similar takes lack what Beatles and other bands had always perfectly mastered.

"I'm in to the first five albums of The Byrds (from Mr Tambourine Man to The Notorious Byrd Brothers), but I dislike their full-blown endeavor into the country rock of Sweetheart of the Rodeo and the often tawdry content of much of their later material." +1 This has been my opinion EXACTLY for decades.
