Not If You Were The Last Dandy On Earth (2:45)

The stand-out single on the album, “Not If You Were The Last Dandy On Earth”, is best known for being a sardonic track that targeted their reply to their friends, The Dandy Warhols. On the DVD commentary for DiG! Matt Hollywood notes that people would say things such as “Wow, Anton wrote a song about him stalking the Dandies?” He quickly ends “Actually, I wrote a song about how I like them, and it got taken as an attack” (quote is paraphrased). Hollywood goes on to discuss how he even borrowed elements of The Dandy Warhol sound. This refutes the popular opinion that the song was a scathing, literal attack and now shows the true friendship between the two bands.

The song was featured on the soundtrack to Jim Jarmusch’s 2005 film Broken Flowers.

As an aside, this song was written by Matt Hollywood, not Anton Newcombe. The DWs and BJM are BOTH great bands and are huge fans of each another. The movie DIG! was just a moment in time when Anton Newcombe was messed up on drugs and jealous of the DWs success. Since then, both bands have gone on to relative critical and commercial success and will eventually tour together (BJM are coming to NYC soon!!).

@tomcarrolls - i know! it's such a great scene in dig! after the whole trial and painstaking effort of the dandys making 'not if you were the last junkie on earth', anton just shows courtney this song and courtneys heart visibly sinks. "you can actually pin point the moment his heart breaks in half". This is arguably the coolest song ever.
