listens to The Blow Parade a lot

Captain Blow is a self-confessed music tragic and broadcaster, whose long-running radio program The Blow Parade is syndicated to over 40 countries worldwide and was recently voted by the taxi industry’s trade magazine Flagfall as the program “least objected to by passengers.”

The Captain began his broadcasting career at the age of 19, hosting a pirate radio show from an offshore ship. Famously prone to sea-sickness, his show became notorious for the frequent on-air vomiting, and featured a particularly memorable interview with The Ronettes where all three members chundered violently on each other.

Joining the BBC in 1968, the Captain quickly distinguished himself from other disc jockeys by replacing all turntable needles with knitting needles, which he claimed gave the records “an edgier sound”. His Radio 2 program Chart Toppers ran for 8 years, making it an unusually long radio shift, before it was eventually pared back to a 2-hour format. The Captain was also the first BBC announcer to introduce traffic reports to radio, but his reports were usually limited to the one, lone street outside his studio window.

Over the years, Captain Blow has interviewed just about every big name in music, as well as people with shorter names as well. Last year marked his 40th year in broadcasting, a milestone which didn’t go unnoticed by Her Majesty the Queen who sent Captain Blow an official royal note asking him to play less Foreigner.
