This is a metaphor! "Dark Night" meaning a comparison of moments in history that may have something in common ... at the same time may not be the same situation. The song writer is talking about different times that prejudice has occurred throughout time. Also, if you listen carefully you will here the story he is trying to tell. In other words, what have we learned. He is showing us of how prejudice proliferates it's ugly head. This could be in love, racism, jealousy, etc. Freedom of speech is a good thing. Especially when it is use to educate. Diffidently not racist! Good lyrics!

If you are thinking racially charged drive by shooting, you are correct. I would not call it a racist song as the singer is shocked and disappointed asks, “I thought these things didn’t matter anymore.”
