About This Track

“Because” is a ballad written by John Lennon (credited to Lennon/McCartney) and performed by The Beatles. It features a 3-part harmony vocal performance between Lennon, McCartney and George Harrison, overdubbed three times to make nine voices in all. The results of this have been compared in sound to The Beach Boys. It appeared on the 1969 album Abbey Road, and is the song that precedes the extended medley that formed side two of the original LP record.
“Because” by The Beatles was inspired by Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” … BACKWARDS.

John Lennon tells the story of the origin of that song: I was lying on the sofa in our house, listening to Yoko play Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” on the piano. Suddenly, I said, “Can you play those chords backward?” She did, and I wrote “Because” around them. The song sounds like “Moonlight Sonata,” too.

"Because" acappella. Not quite the Beach Boys. But then...Brian had other problems he had to deal with...

"sorry, beach boys, you're great and all, but you ain't got shit on the fab4." When the Beatles not only composed and sand, but also arranged and produced highly complex, orchestrated music, then you'll have a talk. I love "Because," but Brian Wilson had written and arranged far more complex and interesting harmonies when he was barely out of his teens. The Beatles were great, but their harmonies were very simple and not very impressive.

I think this may be the melody that came about when John asked Yoko to play a classical piece, "Moonlight Sonata" I think it was, backwards (i.e., reversing the notes). The words, of course, are all John's; well, Paul may have thrown in a line or two, but they were pretty much working apart by that point in the band's run.
