There were two bands named The Beat, both active at the same time in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Both bands mutually decided to use different names while operating in North America:
1) The English two-tone ska band The Beat were known as The English Beat in North America and The British Beat in Australia.
2) The American power-pop band became known as Paul Collins’ Beat.

@BWoolmore With you there, mate - The specials first L.P. I give 9.5 out of ten, Madness never really did it for me, The Selecter had their moments, but The Beat..they just had that something extra to propel the music into C21. I wish I'd've seen them recently. it sounded great.
