• Keep Walkin.....

    26 Nov 2009, 16:24 by sonnycheeebah

Another song that has been covered quite a number of times would be PlayWalk On By, a Burt Bacharach/Hal David composition which was first recorded in 1964 by Dionne Warwick

Here are some of the more outstanding interpretations of that song:

The Jackson 5 included Walk On By (2:30) in a medley which also included some of their hit singles (at that time) for the Diana! TV special OST - sick break!!!

...and a live performance!!! Sickness refined!!! See li'l Michael do the robot!!!

Isaac Hayes' rendition is transformed on record into a twelve-minute funkfest made all the more memorable by being sampled by the likes of Wu-Tang Clan, Ludacris and even Hooverphonic

The Undisputed Truth's version of this track was also sampled heavily by the likes of J Dilla

UK rock band The Stranglers maintain the soulfulness of the original while putting a rockier edge which doesn't come out off-putting though. Love the organ solo on this one...possibly the best one I've heard since Ray Manzarek's work on The Doors' Light My Fire

Cyndi Lauper channels Laura Nyro in her live rendition...

...and Ms. Nyro's version. Listen close....

Meanwhile, as Dionne's version was blowing up big time back then, Aretha Franklin came out with a version that solidifies her reputation even during that time as the Queen of Soul (btw, Dionne's own sister Dee Dee sang back-up on Her Highness' version)

UK soul singer Gabrielle captures the retro goodness of the Dionne Warwick original while incorporating a good deal of Aretha's soulful take on that one.

This song has also been covered by the likes of The Beach Boys, Helen Shapiro, Michael McDonald and Seal

  • Brian Wilson, Konserthuset, Gothenburg. August 30 2009

Brian Wilson, Konserthuset, Gothenburg. August 30 2009

Having overdosed on The Beach Boys and the Smile album/DVD for months and months prior to the show. I had huge expectations on this concert, so huge there really wasn't any possibility they would be fulfilled.

Brian isn't in the best shape and can't sing like he used to but he has an amazing band behind him that are pushing him to his limits and helping him out when needed. The first song PlayCalifornia Girls sounded so-so, I wish they would have saved that one for later when Brian had warmed up more and it would have sounded better as it is one of my favorite Beach Boys songs. They continued with mostly pre-Pet Sounds songs, I was hoping for more Pet Sounds and Smile-era songs but it's still impossible to complain about songs like PlayI Get Around, PlaySurfer Girl, PlayIn My Room, PlayCustom Machine, Play409, PlayLittle Deuce Coupe, PlayFun, Fun, Fun etc. All amazing pop/rock songs.

The magic moment came in the second set starting with John Sloop B followed by PlayWouldn't It Be Nice and PlayGod Only Knows. Those songs sent shivers down the spine... other highlights for me was Sail On Sailor, PlayAdd Some Music to Your Day, PlayDo It Again and When I Grow Up to Be a Man... and the amazing PlayGood Vibrations of course!

All in all a great concert but in my opinion a little too much focus on early rock'n'roll songs... I would have loved to hear PlaySurf's Up, PlayHeroes And Villains, Play'Til I Die, Those three songs would have made it perfect. But as I said it's impossible to complain about any of the 30+ songs that was played. I hope to see him again soon.

  • Fifty Best Albums

    7 Nov 2009, 10:58 by norwegianwood90

In my opinion, these are the fifty best albums of all-time. I will address a few issues before you feel the need to leave posts about them.

    1. Yes, this list will dominated by The Beatles (as well as other English rock bands).
    2. Also, I am aware of the relatively limited number of genres which will be present.
    3. If you are going to criticize my list, I have just one request: Name some albums to which I should listen. I'd love to hear your favorite albums, so I can listen to them, too. I want to listen to as many good albums as possible. Thank you.
