For whatever reason, I kind of ignored Old Believer when it came out, despite having played the first album into the ground when it first came out. I saw Atlas Moth play with Altar of Plagues in Philly a couple of years back and remember being impressed by what I saw despite a lackluster response from the crowd. But for whatever reason (maybe I read a bad review), I had not interest in checking out Old Believer. Now, going back and giving it a listen, I think it's their best album so far. Echoing the sentiment of Meatwad555, the rough hewn and raw vocals add to the sound instead of detract from it. Seems to me they get by on honesty and grit at lest as much, if not more, than on chops. I wouldn't mind hearing them really let it rip on some riff-monsters now and again, but the heavily nuanced and melodic approach is exemplary.

It's weird how much hate this band gets for their vocals. There's a lot of classic Black Metal acts with worse screeching but nobody bats an eye at it. Not to mention they're on fucking point live.

The shitty vocals are part of the charm of this band. I wouldn't have it any other way.

The Old Believer is beautiful. It's a headphone exploration record for sure. On the first listens, I was just focusing on the three guitar parts but now I notice a lot of the synth and keyboard playing which really sets a spacy and psychedelic ambience.

The new album isn't that bad, in fact is has pretty cool harmonies and stuff, but it's really not catchy at all. And of course: the vocals are still awful.
