The Areyoumadatme?s is a band from Portland, Oregon. Its members are Amelia Harnas and Jeff Diteman. Their music has been described as baroque pop, avant-folk, or “barolk”. Amelia sings alto, and their recordings make extensive use of vocal overdubs for the signature sound of Amelia harmonizing with herself. Jeff plays guitar, cello, bass guitar and lap steel, and also provides some vocals. Their songs are mutually written, though Jeff tends to contribute the lyrics with Amelia writing the melodies.
Their influences include Leonard Cohen, Rachel’s, Serge Gainsbourg and Suzanne Vega, and their sound has also been shaped by the current Portland chamber folk music scene, of which they are a part. Indeed, both members have worked together in the bands Ah Holly Fam’ly and Galveston, and musicians Sam Cooper of Horsefeathers, Adam Baz of Brainstorm, and Jeremy Faulkner of Ah Holly Fam’ly contributed session work on the album 13 Trumps. That album also includes piano work by Sarah Long, oboe by Claire Smith, and trumpet by Brian Davidson.
