@silversurfer250 Good post. I vaguely remember the era and boy was it a period of change: Beatles, Motown, Flower Power, Free Love, Drugs, Twiggy, Groovy London, Pirate Radio, Radio One, etc., but most of all . . . there was a feeling of change. Youth was taking over.

The song starts with a spoken intro urging European listeners to fly to San Francisco so they could understand the song. Asked by the NME in 1967 about The Animals losing traction in England, Burdon said: "Britain is not as aware of what we are trying to communicate as the Americans. The whole world still needs a kick up the pants - the Americans are one move ahead. The record company was afraid I would offend England if I released 'San Franciscan Nights'. They thought I had offered enough insults to England." http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=20855

When I was twelve, I wanted to move to San Francisco, because of this song. It was on a cassette tape, that had The Animals on one side, and The Zombies on the other. My formative years were shaped by this, not Whitney Houston. I was so lucky.

I just got the 10,000th play and yet this song has no shouts. Terrible. Love the acoustic solo and the oxymoronic lyrics
