I had never seen Caribou live before this show. I had thought of them as an electronica group. In fact, meticulous drumming is the core of their sound. There is one full-time drummer, the lead singer joins in on another set for about half of the time, and at times other players bang on a cymbal or tom. At the end of the show, Caribou gave a young man up front a drumstick and allowed him to bang on a cymbal.
Lots of percussion and rhythm-based music is a good trend I've noticed in the past year or two at shows, such as those of:
Gentleman Auction House
The Alarmists (Calm Down.)
It's easy to think of a song as a series of chords and I'm glad these artists and others are conceptualizing things differently (it seems). Plus more banging at a live show pumps the blood into your soul and ensures that no-one is Just Standing Around onstage.
