The Raven (7:44)

Cover of Tales of Mystery and Imagination: Edgar Allan Poe

From Tales of Mystery and Imagination: Edgar Allan Poe and 12 other releases

This is from the first Alan Parsons Project Tales of Mystery and Imagination, a concept album based on the Tales of Edgar Alan Poe, a collaboration between Eric Wolfson and Alan Parsons. The Raven was a ground breaker in it’s day being one of the first rock songs to feature the newly developed (by EMI) vocoder, a voice changer used to distort the vocals to great effect in this track.

Bought this when it came out because I liked the album art. Never heard of the band before. Went home, dropped acid and the rest is history...

A perfect converion of Edgar Allan Poe´s poem into music. Got it on the LP "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" by the Alan Parson Project.

And the Raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door; And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming, And the lamp-light o'er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor; And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor Shall be lifted — nevermore!

But the Raven still beguiling all my sad soul into smiling, Straight I wheeled a cushioned seat in front of bird, and bust and door; Then upon the velvet sinking, I betook myself to linking Fancy unto fancy, thinking what this ominous bird of yore — What this grim, ungainly, ghastly, gaunt and ominous bird of yore Meant in croaking "Nevermore."
