Canada (2007 – present)

The Agonist (formerly The Tempest) is a band from Canada, signed to Century Media Records. Hailing from Montreal, The Agonist comprises vocalist Vicky Psarakis, guitarist Danny Marino, bassist Chris Kells, and drummer Simon McKay. Previous members include founding member and former lead singer Alissa White-Gluz.

They released their first album Once Only Imagined on August 14, 2007. Released August 28, 2007, the video for Business Suits and Combat Boots was filmed by acclaimed director David Brodsky (Strapping Young Lad, Gwar, God Forbid)… The video was voted the number 6 video of the year 2007 on MTV2’s Headbanger’s Ball. The mini-video for … and Their Eulogies Sang Me to Sleep off the album Lullabies for the Dormant Mind, also filmed by director David Brodsky, was released April 18, 2009.

The Agonist was originally known primarily for White-Gluz’s ability to use both clean vocals and metal growls. Guitarist Danny Marino, nephew of guitar legend Frank Marino (of Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush), uses a melodic yet aggressive guitar style, making The Agonist’s music both catchy and heavy. The Agonist can also be identified by their creative basslines by Chris Kells, and Simon McKay’s intense and energetic drumming. Also known for their environmental consciousness, song’s themes often revolve around moral concerns such as animal rights, societal dilemmas, and the state of our world.

eye of providence was mediocre overall. they were heading in a great direction with prisoners but its almost as if they went backwards to more of a business suits and combat boots amature-ish style. no singer bias but angela has more of a metal voice that fit the band better. vicky's voice doesn't feel very metal-ish, whatever that means

Kinda liked the music on their latest, but not the vocals as much. The new chick has annoying (clean) screams, almost a bit nasal and false-y at times, and I never was a big fan of the typical inhale screams either. I think she'll get better down the line, though. One more album or two and she should do great. Right now she kinda reminds me of a young female version of Mike Patton (Faith No More).

In the case of The Agonist, Vicky is a pretty good studio vocalist but her lives are very so so. She is often out of breath and misses almost half of the words in harsh parts, especially performing their older songs. The only thing I try to convince myself is that it's the matter of time, she'll get the necessary experience and her screaming/growling will improve 'cause she's definitely talented. But at the moment her harsh vocals seem to be a lot less versatile than Alissa's, they sound superficially and lack power though her cleans are pretty awesome, btw.

I actually think Vicky is a much better vocalist than Alissa, but damn, I wish the rest of the band would match her talent though.

I don't get it, I'm hearing much more structure than before. If anything, they're moving away from that "discordant-core"... but hey, to each his own.

Regarding songwriting, you can safely say that all the great songwriting came from Alissa. The intelligent messages composed into mesmerisingly addictive rhyming songs made them unique and addicting. The new album is very good but the songwriting and the growls could improve. Well, it is safe to say they will improve :)

When I heard the EP 'Disconnect Me' I was sceptic. But the new album is great. It's not perfect, things can be improved. I think The Agonist is a band that's grows with time. I really like when they become more Progressive, 'As Above, So Belov' is fantastic! And Vicky shows her talent in 'A Necessary Evil' and 'Danse Macabre'

The song writing is appalling. All their releases have been fantastic before this, but the instruments just lack so much, or maybe they're just moving so close to Metalcore now that I'm simply not interested? Regardless Vicky's cleans are phenomenal, shame about the growls.

Now, if Vicky practises the technique of her screaming and growling The Agonist will be amazing. The new album is great but some of the growls are lacking that 'spark' that Alissa had. Nevertheless, both bands benefited from the singer change :)

Alissa's clean vocals are absolutely nothing compared to Vicky's. Now the screaming part.. well , she will get better, it's a good start! And I have to agree that the band didn't took advantage of Vicky's potential in the 'Eye of Providence' . Not bad though.

As Above, So Below....with Alissa not possible. Great song.

Also, I'm sad because Vicky can sing pretty high and strong, but 50% of her clean vocal lines are low and boring. At first, I thought she can't do it - but sone songs really show that she's a great vocalist - but the band didn't know how to use her right.
