Chicago, Illinois, United States (2003 – 2011)

The Academy Is… was a band which formed in 2003 in Chicago, Illinois, United States. The band’s longest lasting lineup consisted of William Beckett (vocals, guitar), Mike Carden (guitar, vocals), Michael Chislett (guitar, keyboards), Adam Siska (bass) and Andy Mrotek (drums). The band released three albums - “Almost Here” (2005), “Santi” (2007) and “Fast Times at Barrington High” (2008) - before disbanding in 2011, several months after Chislett and Mrotek left the band.

William Beckett (singer) and Adam T. Siska’s (bass) plans for starting a band together came to fruition on March 4, 2003 recruiting Mike Carden (guitar) after his former band, Jodie, which had members of Victory Records act June, broke up then eventually adding AJ LaTrace as a lead guitarist and Michael DelPrincipe (Little Mike) as a drummer. They recorded their self-titled debut EP, The Academy (2004), for the Chicago-based label LLR Recordings. LLR Recordings had previously released Beckett’s solo project Remember Maine’s debut album The Last Place You Look in 2002 and Mike Carden’s solo folk album in 2003. The EP was recorded in Villa Park, IL at The Gallery of Carpet by producer Brian Zieske. Pete Wentz from Fall Out Boy heard it and was impressed. The label Fueled by Ramen immediately signed the band.

In 2004 the band headed to Florida to record their Fueled by Ramen debut Almost Here, produced by James Paul Wisner, who has worked with Dashboard Confessional, Something Corporate, Further Seems Forever, and Underoath.

i hate fast times so much and sometimes i wish someone had the same opinion on it. on the other hand, i love almost here and santi, and the eps and singles previous to that already-named-shitty-record. don't get me wrong, i love pop, but that album is just forgettable and a stain on their discography. (i felt the need to share it)

Almost Here remains a favorite album of mine. Seeing them back in '04-'06 were some of the most fun shows I've been to. Brings me back to my college days.

I'm glad I was fortunate to see this band back in July 2009 when they were on the MTV Sunblock music festival with Never Shout Never, Kid Cudi, THE VERONICAS, and Boys Like Girls. I'd never heard of The Academy Is... until this music festival. I'm sad to hear that they've disbanded. I wish all the members the best of luck in whatever they decide to pursue in their musical careers!
