Detroit, United States (1997 – present)

The White Stripes are an American band, formed in 1997 in Detroit, Michigan. The group consists of songwriter Jack White (vocals, piano/keyboards, and guitar) and Meg White (drums, vocals).

After releasing several singles and three albums within the Detroit independent music underground, The White Stripes rose to prominence in 2002, as part of the scene. Their successful albums White Blood Cells and Elephant drew them attention from a large variety of media outlets in the United States and the United Kingdom.

The White Stripes use a low-fidelity, do-it-yourself approach to writing and recording. Their music features a melding of and influences and a raw simplicity of composition, arrangement, and performance. The duo is also noted for their fashion and design aesthetic which features a simple color scheme of red, white, and black.

The White Stripes’ discography consists of six studio albums, two extended plays (EP), one video album, 26 singles and fourteen music videos. The band has sold approximately 12 million albums worldwide, 2 million in the US alone, and their latest three albums have each won a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album.

@gabethevegan: I'm curious as to which White Stripes album you think is the "blank" one.

Agreed, the amount of money I've spent on the White Stripes on all those little rare and collectables is testament to that.

Agreed on an objective level..when i talk about Artists/Bands..its always My Fave bands,Bands and Artists i love..Dont make any bigger claim than that...tho in my Heart i believe there is Hierarchy of Taste. no one has ever defined it,so for now i'll go with my Limitted and narrow subjective taste.. For Me The Stripes Defined the Noughties thats all.

There is no definitive noughties record or band. There's simply too much material to pick just one to summarize it all. The Strokes are aptly named in relation to their egos and not much else.

I'm not dissing The Strokes in my top five easily poss number two,Jack White like Prince b4 him tho loved seems to really separate critics.Raconteurs i think i like, tho they have taken Jack's eye off The Stripes

I respectfully disagree, gabethevegan, how impactive a band are is hugely relevant to how good their music is, especially in a 'best of' list-type-thing. I'm not defending NME or The Strokes here really, I just think Is This It deserves top spot even over albums I rate higher personally- it is the album that defines the decade, enough said. Gotta agree with you on Jack, he is my favourite song-writer and I love the Raconteurs too.

That is somewhat fricken awesome. Tbh though I can't see how Dead Weather deserve a spot, and even Raconteurs is a bit of a stretch for me... everyone has bias at the end of the day.....

I keep hearing how influential the Strokes are.Dont see the revelance. The stripes are the best Band of the Noughties,Six Albums and only one Blank. The strokes were always more about style...and the NME have always had it in for jack white...and look at some of the spite directed by them at the Divine Meg.The NME have been a joke for the last ten yrs..Smash Hits for the Indie Geneation..and Oasis's hse Mag... Gaz_Nokia so pleased i am not the only one who rates De Stijl my fave closely followed by White Blood Cells...and Szklane_oko...I agree with you..it probably marks us down as saddoes..but the Stripes early Albums are raw and messy...love them...Lists are not unimportant esp at yrs end or decades end ..people read them and people with Money or gift tokens at Xmas will buy Albums/Cds and people read them..if NME get it wrong they need to be told..The Times in Britain voted Kid A Top Cd of the Decade...Fuckin Criminal.

I agreed with... parts of NME's top 50 but you can't say that they dont think The White Stripes are cool or that The Strokes are less deserving of the top spot. I think TWS were the only band to have three albums in the list weren’t they? was it four? TWS have been much more consistent over the decade but The Stokes were more influential in the end. I'd have had White Blood Cells in as a close second, they did push them back a bit far in the list for my liking but in the end, it’s just a stupid list hahaha

yeah, first recordings are more like blues stuff and they're rough. i like debut album a lot, and bootlegs and rarities more than studio albums recently.
