The Tangent began in 2002 as a project to record some compositions of the band’s primary writer, Andy Tillison, with several members of The Flower Kings (Roine Stolt, Zoltan Csörsz, and Jonas Reingold), David Jackson and some of Andy’s friends (Sam Baine, Guy Manning). During that first recording, many of the musicians never met in person. After some critical acclaim, another album was recorded. This was followed by successful live performances, during which the project—which was only intended as a single-album collaboration—became a band.

Roine Stolt and Zoltan Csörsz have since left the band and been replaced by Jaime Salazar and Krister Jonsson. The Tangent is now a seven-member band spread across three countries. It continues to use technology to allow its members to collaborate despite their geographic separation and continuing commitments to other bands. The band draws more on the jazzy Canterbury style than most modern progressive rock bands.

Ex- Van Der Graaf Generator star, David Jackson was also replaced by Theo Travis (sax/flute) in 2004.

In 2008, Jaime Salazar, Zoltan Csörsz and Jonas Reingold departed and were replaced by the whole young Swedish prog band Beardfish, featuring Rikard Sjoblom (keyboards/vocals/guitar) David Zackrisson,(guitar) Magnus Ostgren(drums) and Robert Hansen (bass). Beardfish continue to perform in their own right.

I really love The Music That Died Alone. It made me good company in a couple of big journeys; believe it or not it's great music to walk along with and admire the landscapes. :)

Oh, sorry. It's something like "nevertheless" or "anyways." Maybe "moving on." A local dialect thing. My apologies.

Ha, no problem. I understand that as well. I do lots of listening in the car and in the stereo that isn't reflected at all on here. That's why I wasn't being too assertive about the quality of your last.fm top bands. It's okay. But even still. Fans of 70s prog have it tough. For one, most of the time modern prog bands strike them (us?) as rehashes, ripoffs, and stereotypes based on the genre pioneers and early giants. Those that don't end up sounding strange and weird to a fan of the commercial prog from back then. Truth be told, Genesis and Pink Floyd aren't really all that proggy themselves. With the exceptions for a few albums for each, those two are landmarks in taking progressive tendencies and turning them into popular and slightly watered-down prog. Van der Graaf, King Crimson, Frank Zappa--there is the prog from the 70s. The Tangent merely plays to the people who want more like that music. It's in the style of, not exactly like. Make sense?

2 LiquidEternity: The reason why I said this provocative phrase is my love to(of) debates(can i say like that?).About bands: my top 15 is crap. I used to listen a lot of music from CD's. And about subject: just wait for 3-4 weeks, I will meet closer with old progressive bands and then i will...Uh!) Prepare yourself for my appearance!

2 donquique I won't comment anything about PF because it's jusy difference between our views on music. About prog: you didn't understand me clearly. I said, that Tangent hasn't brought new to progressive. But Yes and Genesis of course yes. They're peoneers of progressive rock, and they're were those, who invent this style. They exactly brought new ideas to rock music.

Truth be told, I'm a huge fan and demander of originality. But The Tangent doesn't exist like a ripoff band or anything. They play in similar style to those of the 70s, yet they are nothing like any of those major bands. Yeah, I do hear strong traces of these bands. But The Tangent exists as a completely unique entity to themselves. Nobody then and nobody now plays what they do. And, Sixshooter, not to be obnoxious or anything, but not a one of your top fifteen artists brought anything remotely new to prog, either. So why hold The Tangent, a band dedicated to having fun and looking back over prog, to some silly standard like that?

Who wants another Pink Floyd? Porcupine Tree the new Pink Floyd?, c'mon.... stop comparing, those preconcepts and histerical tagging are nonsense. In this world exist two types of music, the music that moves you and the music that don't. And btw, vote for another picture folks, I'm sick of that one...

Look, I don't wanna say that The Tangent plays music similar to Pink Floyd. But I very often saw when somebody put tag "New Pink Floyd" on The Tangent. Thing I don't like in The Tangent is their kinship to Yes, Genesis and so on. They haven't brought new ideas to progressive, as it did PF.

Interesting. I would never have compared to The Tangent to Pink Floyd except to point out that Andy Tillison's voice sounds a whole lot like Roger Waters. For the most part, though, The Tangent's influences are much more centered around the Canterbury Scene, Yes, Genesis, Van der Graaf Generator, and so forth. They aren't space rock or psychedelic in any way that I can think of. And Porcupine Tree is pretty good, but they focus mostly entirely on the melody and making a powerful, simple structure. The Tangent is all about over the top, pretentious prog. You want to give me a comparison of songs that you are looking at?
