Terraced Garden was formed when Carl Tafel, went into the studio in 1981 to record some songs he had accumulated over the years. Tafel had previously played guitar with the Toronto based progressive rock band Ex Libris, and had spent a year playing bass with the power trio version of Cardboard Brains. He was augmented on these sessions by drummer Peter Weeks and reeds/woodwind player Ian Colvin, who he had worked with in Ex Libris. Just prior to recording he met violinist Simon Jacobs at a party, and had him play violin on a number of tracks. Tafel recorded nine songs before he ran out of money. Returning to the studio a year later with drummer Phil Dewhurst he recorded Noise and Haste and finished mixing the album (the track Barren Ground-from the first sessions-remains unreleased). The album, Melody and Menace, was released in Dec. of 1982.
Needing to get a live band together ( Tafel had been gigging at that time along to a taped backing track) Tafel recruited bassist Darrell Flint (who had played in a later version of Cardboard Brains) his friend, drummer Scott Weber, and guitarist Jody Mitchell. Simon Jacobs joined initially as a featured player, soon to become full time. They rehearsed the songs from the first album, and Tafel frantically started writing additional songs to fill out the live show. These songs became Terraced Garden’s second album, Braille.
