Techno Animal formed in 1990 and has been a defunct project since early 2004. A mechanoid manifestation of Justin Broadrick and Kevin Martin’s increasing appetite for studio explorations, the name was a practical abbreviation addressing the concept of a technological animal.

Most long-time fans will know of side projects, alter-egos & new projects such as Justin K. Broadrick’s Jesu releases, Kevin Martin’s dub releases as The Bug, collaborations under the name Ice and early electronic project The Sidewinder (not to be confused with the early electronic music project of the 1960s-70s or the UK dance group of similar name), not to mention pre-Techno Animal avant-jazz / noise / dub band God(featuring John Zorn, Lou Ciccotelli a long-time member as well as live drummer for Laika, Alex Buess and other luminaries).

I'm a little late getting back on this but yes, Techno Animal was one of the first groups to be described as "post-rock". This is an indisputable historical fact. Sure, the connotations of the term have changed over the last 15 years but there's no arguing with the fact that Techno Animal was one of the first post-rock groups. Techno Animal have been defunct since early 2004 according to several sources. Curse of the Golden Vampire (side-project) appears to be the final release. They only received a certain level of interest and things came to a head with Brotherhood of the Bomb when the response was very contentious and divided as evinced by the North American tour. I wouldn't expect it to come back, but it's possible Kevin and Justin will work together again, though there is no word that that's coming anytime soon. I love their hip-hop experiments. I knew a fellow who was signed during the last days of Grand Royal (DJ Strictnine) here in South Bend. It looked like we might all be signed, then GR folded since Mike D. wasn't bothering to even run it most of the time. But at least they did a 12" of TA.
