The Working Hour (6:31)

Cover of Songs from the Big Chair

From Songs from the Big Chair and 12 other releases

This song originated from 1984, when the band (the full ensemble who would later back them up on the Songs from the big chair-tour) was touring with The hurting.
Drummer Manny Elias came up with the basic drumpattern and suggested it to Roland.
Roland took some unused chords from keyboardist Ian Stanly, wrote lyrics to it and took it from there.

It became his way of getting the bad feeling he had about Tears For Fears becoming a business, and having to tour the world in your ealy twenties, off his chest.

The song came together in about half an hour.
The recording that you hear is the only recording they ever did:
They put a tape recorder near by and just played.
Wich is why it has a very live feel to it.
In the studio the song wasn’t played again for the album, the master went directly onto vinyl.

Wow thought I was the only one that liked this song ... I have to admit when I was 13 I had a fear about letting people know I liked this song because it was not manly enough. LOL I grew up and realized that you create your own fear. Minus natural causes.

There is just so much going on… rising and falling overlapping melodies, fills, riffs… it’s beautiful chaos.

This is sooo fucking good. Some actual talent and musicianship are things you don't find in pop music today, so I'm thankful for Tears for Fears.

@Robotskill To a certain degree, I'm thankfull that stuff like this isn't written anymore. It keeps it rare and special.

Nobody writes like this anymore. You just have to marvel at it as you unwind it all in your mind. So much of what's written today is just a blast to the package. (sigh)

The drama, the passion, the transition at 1:45 - perfect. Not even the sax can ruin it ;)
