Tonight I went and saw this "Masters of Percussion" concert at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis. It was all east Indian music, mostly North Indian drumming. Really intense. I love the way east Indian instruments sound. Zakir Hussain on tabla, Fazal Qureshi on tabla, Taufiq Qureshi as general percussionist (and had an awesome kit), Bhavani Shankar on dholak and pakhawaj, Khete Khan on khartal, Ustad Sultan Khan on the sarangi, and Niladra Kumar on sitar. Also there was Manipuri Jagoi Marup, the Dancing Drummers of Manipur. Three drummers combining dancing, drumming, and martial arts. At one point, one of the guys put his drum down on the floor, and did this spinning-jump maneuver to make his way around the drum in circles, hitting perfectly timed doubles with what the other 7 percussionists were playing. I was impressed, to say the least.
