Biography

Like many before him, Colin Meloy (The Decemberists) was a frustrated college student before he was an acclaimed songwriter. While majoring in English, with an emphasis on creative writing at the University of Montana, he also played in an alternative-countryish band called Tarkio from 1996 - 1999. Members included Colin Meloy, Gibson Hartwell, Louis Stein, and Brian Collins. In 2006, Kill Rock Stars released a 2-cd discography of Tarkio’s material entitled “Omnibus”.

tarkio is definitely a more accessible version of the decemberists. if you like tarkio and think you don't like the decemberists, you should listen to the decemberists 2011 album the king is dead. meloy has talent for songwriting, and people loves when he writes that ridiculous (but good, for the most part) folk about deer turning into men and falling in love and stuff (which is funny because annan water literally just came on...) with the king is dead, he choked back on all that, and wrote some shockingly...normal? relatable? lyrics. great album, no doubt.

Does anyone know whether songs like Sanding Still, Annabelle Leigh, and Following Camden Down that were only released on Omnibus and not I Guess I Was Hoping For Something More or Sea Songs for Landlocked Sailors were actually on Tarkio's first EP Falleness? I ask because I can't find the track listing for that EP anywhere. Another question, does any know if the album art for Sea Songs for Landlocked Sailors is anywhere on the internet?

Tarkio is good, but they don't have anywhere near the versatility of the Decemberists. I think the Decemberists just have better chemistry too-- the Decemberists songs that sound like Tarkio are still better.

it's difficult to argue that a band with one released cd is better than the decemberists..

Can't believe how few listeners there are compared to The Decemberists. Some of this stuff is just as good as The Decemberists.
